Opening animation sequence:

This was one of the most difficult and time consuming processes of the whole production. However it one of the first scenes that was attempted because if I couldn't get this one to look good, there wouldn't be much hope for the rest of the film.

So a lot was hinging on the completion of this one segment.

sb01

The image on the sceen appears as the music begins to play, it is a rough pencil sketch of Nausicaa that is drawn before your eyes. This consists of nearly 120 drawings that I worked on over the course of the summer. Whenever I got a free moment from working with the horses I was upstairs with the light table trying to complete another page.

sb2

Nausicaa waits patiently as she is completed and can be brought to life...

sb3

The only color in this scene is her red earrings but it is difficult to see. Once the drawings were completed, the next problem was how they were to be digitized and strung together as an animation... but that's another story (click here for that other story.)

sb4

Upon completion, the picture dissolves to a full screen, full color image.
